Leaders in their field

All our Instructors have many years of navigational experience as professional navigators in either the Military, as volunteers and training officers or team leaders in Mountain Rescue, or as Navigational Instructors, and also often have experience as Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Award Assessors too.

Our young persons and DOE teams have regular enhanced DBS checks (all our instructors have regular DBC checks) and are all current and qualified DOE Gold assessors too.

All our instructors are trained not only to be expert navigators but in advanced learning techniques to help you learn a way that suits you. All are experienced in leading and managing groups, to ensure everyone is safe, involved, enjoys the course and gets the best out of it.  UNS instructors undergo constant retraining and quality checks (in both navigation and teaching standards), to ensure they remain the best in their field.

Most importantly for us though, is that all our instructors work for the Ultimate Navigation School as employees. We hand pick them as experts and as good teachers, but we also look for those that are good with people too. By not using free lance instructors, or franchising our courses out, we feel we can carefully select, monitor and maintain a regular and consistent high quality for our students, who by choosing an Ultimate Navigation School course, naturally expect and deserve the best training in the field.

Each instructor has:

  1. Many years of experience teaching navigation on the hills
  2. Has undergone individual assessment and accreditation by Lyle Brotherton in the last 12 months
  3. Has their courses quality checked by another instructor every 6 months
  4. Has to attend training refreshers twice a year and be signed off as current
  5. Has a regular DBS check
  6. Carries a UNS ID card declaring their instructor rating and currency.

Their commitment is to keep you safe, help you have a good time, give you the confidence and support to become the best navigator you can be.

All our instructors will carry an Ultimate Navigation School identity card and are DBS checked.*

*Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks are now called Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.
