Weather forecast

We teach weather basics on all our courses and recommend always checking the weather forecast before hill walk. The Mountain Weather Information Service above offers good forecasts for most UK mountain areas. Click on the image to view today’s forecasts. The Met Office also do a good Mountain forecast that can be found here.



Ordnance Survey do some great flash cards to learn the map symbols from (or you can use the grid /key of course on your map) but these are useful to test yourself!

Download the Ordnance Survey (OS) map symbols for 1:50000 Landranger maps and 1:25000 Explorer maps and learn the OS map symbols.

Route card

Click on the image above to download a route card that you can use to leave behind with a responsible person, advising them of your route and when you expect to be back. It also contains instructions for them on how to call Mountain Rescue.  You can also use it to plot your routes for your day out in the hills.

Grid Magnetic Angle Calculator

We teach the different Norths, the Grid Magnetic Angle (GMA) and how to accurately take and use compass bearings on all our courses. To calculate the GMA use the British Geological Survey site and enter the location you want the angle for.
