For the COURSE:

  • Come dressed in hill gear and boots, with your rucksack packed as shown on this page.
  • Ensure your mobile phone is charged, and bring your charger. You may need some cash for snacks etc
  • Bring a packed lunch and drink
  • Pack any medication you need, and advise your instructor before you set out on the hill if there are any conditions that may affect you on the course
  • You can buy our recommended gear at a discount from our shop before the course
  • Bring a waterproof OS 1:25000 map of your course area or buy one from the instructor on the day
  • Please arrive for your course by 09:30hrs at the latest ready to go on the hill. Tea/Coffee will be served from 09:00. If you need transport advice contact the course manager or hotel.
  • Note – Night Nav courses start on Friday’s at 16:30 hrs
  • For your course –
  • Bring spare hill clothing and boots if you have them , you may get wet on the first day and dry gear will be needed
  • Bring Comfortable spare clothes and shoes for around the hotel
  • Bring Toiletries and cash for extras you may wish for in the hotel
  • Allow time to check in before your course starts.

For the HILL:

  • Waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers
  • An Ordnance Survey (OS) 1:25000 waterproof map of the area covering your course (see your welcome email for details or you can buy from your instructor on the day)
  • Compass
  • Hat & Gloves, and spares in wet or cold weather
  • Base layer, Mid layer and Insulation layer
  • Hill walking trousers (definitely not jeans or sports leggings)
  • Hill walking boots and socks (test comfort before your walk), Boot gaiters optional
  • Rucksack (min 25 litres) with a dry liner
  • Head torch  (even for day walks) and test it before going out. Spare head torch if you have one, or spare batteries if not
  • Whistle, spare map, spare compass
  • Watch or stopwatch
  • Sat Nav/GPS and spare batteries if you have one. Pencil and paper. A PLB if you have one (this is optional)
  • Food, Water, Flask hot drink
  • Survival shelter and survival poly bag
  • Blizzard survival bag (Note the Shelter and Blizzard bag is optional for Foundation Courses – a poly survival bag will suffice for foundation courses)
  • First Aid kit
  • Walking poles if you use them
  • In hot weather – pack sun cream, sun hat, SPF lip salve, SPF base layer, extra water, lighter boots if you have them, and sunglasses.
  • In cold weather – pack ice grips, heavier boots, goggles, helmet, lip salve and additional layers, long johns, snood, extra gloves & hat, extra food and a hot drink, ice axe and crampons and know how to use them
  • For Night and Advanced courses –  pack extra head torch batteries, a red head torch filter if you have one, extra food and layers, heavier boots if you have them
  • Fully charged mobile phone and spare if you have one
  • Any medication prescribed to you
  • Wrap all gear in waterproof bags inside your rucksack liner
  • For SatNav courses, bring your SatNav device or Smartphone & App, two spare battery sets per day or a spare power pack, and bring your laptop if you have one.
